Writing, in it's purest form, is a medium of human communication.  It represents language and has the ability to convey an endless spectrum of emotion with signs and symbols. In its most advanced form, written expression can be vivid as a work of art.

There are many types of writing, branched out and sub-categorized endlessly - however, they begin with the two main ones: fiction and non-fiction.

Fiction includes includes some common genres, such as - fantasy (the Harry Potter series), science fiction (the Hunger Games series), mystery (Sherlock Holmes), horror (Stephen King's IT), adventure (Moby Dick), children's literature (Dr. Seuss' children's books) and young adult fiction (the Divergent series). 

However, it also includes lesser known genres, such as speculative fiction, family saga, western, wuxia, bizarro fiction, political fiction, meta-fiction, and mythopoeia.

Non-fiction can include memoirs, essays, prose, creative non-fiction, and articles. They can also include poetry, which may fall into either the fiction or non-fiction cateogry.
